Academic Profile

Erdem, born in 1975 in Turkey, studied international relations in his first degree at the Faculty of Political Science, Ankara University, Turkey, and then wrote his MA thesis on the legal aspects of various island disputes at the same Faculty. In the meantime, he was employed at the international law chair of his Faculty as Research Assistant in 1998. During the first year of his PhD education in Ankara, his University granted him a scholarship for PhD abroad. Thus he re-started his PhD education at Cardiff Law School in October 2000 and studied on the theory of international watercourses law under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Robin Churchill. He has been awarded his PhD at this school in January 2005.

He was also granted a short-term research scholarship by The Tokyo Foundation and he did research on island disputes in Japan in March 2001. He is the author of four books (including one collaboration), and several articles on various aspects of international law as well as Turkish Foreign Policy. His main interest areas are the theory and history of international law, de-colonial international studies, international organisations, European integration and human rights, international criminal justice, nuclear disarmament, international watercourse law, environmental law and media-foreign policy relations.

In addition to his lectureship at the Faculty of Political Science, he is the Deputy Diretor of European Research Centre (ATAUM) of Ankara University.
